Knocking Off

Scroll down for english, please!

With this knock off tour I was able to do two of my favorite things: 1. knock off a ready to wear I liked, and 2. refashion! It's been a while since I did any of those things though, and getting back to it kept me thinking and going back to the way I sewed a few years ago. I depended less on patterns and I was always able to achieve exactly what I wanted. I'll tell you all about it in a bit.

I can say I lost more time searching something I'd love to knock off than actually sewing it (which took me 3 hours including studying the whole things, figuring how to hack it, pattern making, cutting and sewing). And it is absurd, because I keep seeing things I want to recreate all the time (more often than not I never do). Right when my time was slipping away, I went with this skirt above.

The original is a skirt from 3 Pommes. I almost did another skirt from them, but I didn't have the right fabric to it. I am pleased with what I did here, although ours doesn't have that little princess crown on the front. Because I was refashioning, I was limited on fabric amount, and I guess I could have done that waistband better, I wasn't so happy about it when I was finished.

So how did I do this? First I picked one of her skirts for lenght and waist size. Then I divided the lenght of the bottom skirt I cut from the original dress and divided it by 7 which is the number of pleats I had to create to recreate the one from 3 Pommes. So I did, 7 on the front and 7 on the back. I would have liked to do a one-piece skirt panel and waist but my fabric wasn't enough.

I could tell from their photo that there was some sort of ties at the waist but I couldn't really figured out how they were there. I chose to make two button holes hidden in the front waistband, and made a long enough tie to go around her waist to adjust to her measurement. I wasn't sure if it was going to work when we pulled, but it did ok.

She's been saying her new favorite color is black. Although it is indeed one of my most used colors, I've always used all the other on the kids. I do love to see them in black, grey, etc, but I didn't want my personal tastes to dictate whatever they wore. The original skirt was made in navy blue, but this one in fabric was the closest thing I had in my stash, so black it is. You can imagine her joy about "having yet another black piece!"... it's crazy people. The original skirt also included the leggings, but since she already had a pair of black ones we used those for this look.

You gotta love her ninja moves, right?!
